iGM Resins Launches Photomer® SC91, A New Photoactive Resin Chemistry
iGM Resins announces the launch of Photomer® SC91, introducing a breakthrough in UV curing technology. This innovation represents a new chemistry that fundamentally changes how photoinitiation is delivered in UV and LED systems.
A New Approach to Photoinitiation
Photomer® SC91 is a self curable acrylate resin with built in photoinitiator functionality. Unlike conventional systems, it enables UV Hg or UV LED curing with no or only minimal addition of external photoinitiators. This is achieved by integrating the photoinitiating groups directly into the resin backbone.
This Type II photoactive concept combines acrylate and photoinitiator technologies in a single polymeric material. As a result, the photoinitiator part remains chemically bound within the structure.
Designed for Today’s Regulatory and Performance Needs
Photomer® SC91 addresses key formulation challenges in modern UV systems:
- Reduced or eliminated need for added photoinitiators
- Low migration potential for sensitive applications
- No detectable extractable photoinitiator under test conditions
- Polymer classification with molecular weight above 1000 Da
This makes it particularly suitable for applications such as indirect food contact packaging, where control of migration is critical.
Performance Without Compromise
Photomer® SC91 delivers strong technical performance across multiple dimensions:
- Efficient curing under both UV Hg and LED systems
- Excellent formulation compatibility
- Liquid form for easy handling and processing
- Typical use levels between 10 and 20 percent in formulations
As a Type II system, it requires the presence of a synergistic amine or hydrogen donor to achieve optimal curing performance.
Broad Application Versatility
Photomer® SC91 is designed for a wide range of UV and LED applications, including:
- Printing inks and packaging
- Overprint varnishes
- Industrial coatings
- Adhesives
- Electronics and advanced materials
Its flexibility allows formulators to simplify systems while maintaining high performance.
The Start of the Photomer® SC Series
The launch of Photomer® SC91 marks the beginning of a new Photomer® SC series. This platform is based on self-curable resin technology and will expand to address evolving market requirements in performance, sustainability, and regulatory compliance.
iGM Resins is developing additional materials within this series to support next generation UV formulations. We are currently awaiting customer feedback to guide us in creating the optimal new combination of acrylate and photoinitiator for evolving application needs.
A New Standard in UV Chemistry
Photomer® SC91 introduces a new way of thinking about UV curing. By embedding photoinitiation directly into the resin, it simplifies formulation design while supporting low migration requirements and efficient processing.
This launch establishes a strong foundation for future innovations and confirms iGM Resins’ commitment to advancing UV curing technologies.
